Make This Life (McDonnell)

Rosa gets onto the boat and folds her past away
Like the billfold in her wallet
Her overnight bag’s heavy - with promises
Of an new life ahead and new found successes
In a world all shiny with steel and sweat
And television glamour
And decisions that are made on the turn of a card

Make this life new in the city
Don’t look back no time for pity
Like she say you got to be lucky
To make this life alone

She closes her coat against the chill that rises from the water
The way she closed her heart to the censure and reproval
Of small town convention
And the way she saw herself
Not as vigorous and strong and innocent
But hopelessly provincial and racked with guilt

Make this life new in the city
Don’t look back no time for pity
Like she say you got to be lucky
To make this life alone

You got to be brave enough to try
Make those changes. It will be fine
There’s no place for faith
Or certainty here
And if life knocks you down you gotta get up

Rosa walks onto the street excited and afraid
Alone among the millions
Remembering the warnings and stories she’d been fed
On the evils of cities
Should things go well should things go wrong
She embraces the changes
And faces each challenge again and again

Make this life new in the city
Don’t look back no time for pity
Like she say you got to be lucky
To make this life alone
