A Personal History Of Distress Signals (McDonnell)

I’m standing very still

I needed somewhere I could disappear
A dead zone maybe?
I need the oxygen, like getting high
I can forget it all

I made a bonfire of the marigolds
And then I walked among the flames
I saw eyes in the walls
Rousseau in the trees
I lay blood in the troughs
So the angels would come

It’s a chemical thing
In a burned out basement
An emotional thing
Like I want to believe the lie
It’s the way of addiction
Anybody could tell you so

She took a razor to my certainty
All the things I had known
She called me up on the phone and said
This tightrope is your own

You shouldn’t call me Ozymandius
When there are people out there…..
I am alone in an isolated farmhouse
You shouldn’t get close

It’s a physical thing
Like a trace of infection
A biological thing
Like a parasite in my blood

Can you hear me now?
I’m lost out here

I could be talking very loud
In an overcrowded common room
Being smart about the maths
Here’s looking at Euclid

You think I do as I please?
Without vulnerability
I struggle with the ordinary
I’m gonna have to be brave

Can you hear me now?
Hear me now
It’s personal
